Today's NFL it would be roughing the passer. 15 yard penalty. Gastineau ejected.

If I was Long (QB) , I would have had a few choice words for that Offensive End , that completely missed the block assignment on Gastineau. !! LOL

  • @bchase001

That was Lomas Brown who stood by and didn't bother blocking. He later admitted to intentionally missing blocks on Scott Mitchell so that he would get injured. This play certainly seemed intentional as well. He made no effort at all and just let Gastineau fly while remaining frozen. Give me a break!

NBC was promoting the 1988 Olympics. Gastineau was making his comeback after a couple of dormant years. He quit later in the year while leading the NFL in sacks to care for Stallone's ex-Brigitte Nielsen. Awwww the 80's

+AnthonyPappadappolis The reason why Mark Gastineau did not do his Sack Dance after sacking Chuck Long was because the Rams cut that shit out 5 years earlier when they expressed their feelings about it after Gastineau got to Vince Ferragamo. Yes, you are right, Mark Gastineau was One of the Biggest Assholes in the NFL! Big enough to make Lyle Alzado An Upstanding Citizen.

This loss did not officially eliminate the Giants from the playoffs despite finishing 10-6 regualr season & would have backed-in into the playoffs if not for the L.A. Rams 38-16 rout of the 49ers later that Sunday night in a game the 49ers put no effort to win. Their 2 head-to-head losses to Philadelphia (10-6) & their regular season loss to the Rams (10-6) in week 4 was the difference between making or missing the playoffs.

I surely remember this pivotal game between the Gang Green and the Big Blue in December 1988. I actually won my bet in the office pool because of O'Brien's 5-yard TD pass to Toon. It seems just like yesterday in all retrospectives. What sticks out of my mind is that LT was a non-factor (no INT/Sack /Forced Fumble) in this clash. Like the old saying: "On any given Sunday, any NFL team can beat any other NFL team".
